The Lover

The Lover

Love is all you need—in life and in death

You’ve always lived a life rich in love and joyful connection—and your grand finale won’t be any different. The Lover’s last moments are filled with happy memories and sweet visions of the faces of their loved ones. It’s the sound of their voices and feel of their hands that fills your heart and brings peace and acceptance to your mind.

You hold a deep truth in your heart: To live well is to love well. For The Lover, connection is the truest and fullest measure of a life well-lived. It may, in fact, be the only thing that really matters in the end. And in this, your heart carries a great wisdom, known through the eras by the Sufi mystics, the romantic poets, even the Beatles: all you need is love. You may or may not call yourself “spiritual,” but you believe in love as the invisible glue that holds the universe together.

For you, this is less of a mystical revelation and more of an everyday, embodied experience. It’s actually quite simple: Relationships are what give life meaning. In the absence of loving connection, our lives become dull and dry; devoid of purpose and joy. This isn’t a nice sentiment but a scientific fact: Harvard’s famous 75-year study of human happiness found that close relationships are by far the strongest indicator of a happy and meaningful life.

When facing the reality of death, you find ease in settling your affairs in advance so that you can focus on what really matters. A vibrant celebration-of-life ceremony bringing together the ones you love in joyful remembrance helps you to embrace death as the culmination of a beautiful life.

Biggest Fear

Being alone at the time of death.

Questions to Contemplate

What do you wish to leave behind for your loved ones? How do you honor those who have passed and hold them in your heart? Does love survive death? How can you treasure the people in your life more knowing that they too will die one day? Above all: Did you love well?

Top Regret

Words unspoken; missed opportunities to connect and heal family conflicts.

Death Meditation

Expand the sphere of your loving heart to embrace all beings with a classic Tibetan Buddhist meditation on interconnectivity. The meditation goes like this: contemplate the idea that all beings, in one lifetime or another, have been your mother. Even if you find this idea challenging, just try to put your rational mind aside and imagine what it would be like to have this level of intimate connection with not only your own family but with the greater human family.
